Happy Valentine's Day!

via flickr.com/jesshibb - Spectra Polaroid taken in NYC, December 2009

I actually think Valentine's Day is sort of lame, but I enjoy having an excuse to tell people I appreciate them. So thanks for reading this silly little blog! xoxo!

Speaking of appreciation, thank you to April for mentioning me in her fabulous list of local bloggers.

Do Not Disturb

And to those who know that true listening is worship, silence is one of nature's most transformative sermons. I am filled with gratitude to have heard it. Max Ehrmann was right-on when he wrote: "Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence."

Dimock, Pennsylvania is a quiet town. Even more quiet when covered with a blanket of snow and temperatures in the single digits. I love my small city neighborhood, but sometimes miss having this kind of peaceful scene as part of my everyday life.

(Another bookmarklet post ... Hey, it works!)

Oh Abe ... If you could only see us now ...

The money powers prey upon the nation

"The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace and conspire against it in times of adversity.

"It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, and more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies, all who question its methods or throw light upon its crimes. I have two great enemies, the Southern Army in front of me and the Bankers in the rear.

"Of the two, the one at my rear is my greatest foe.. corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money powers of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the Republic is destroyed."

-- Abraham Lincoln

I saw this quote on Frank's blog, and it seemed a perfect fit for this image. I took it at Union Square Park when I was in New York last month.

I also wanted to try out the "Share on Posterous" bookmarklet. Hopefully it works!

Conrad Composite

I'm finally back in Maryland after a great week at the WebLink Summit in Indianapolis. Still working on unpacking, sorting/scanning photos, and catching up ... But I wanted to take time to post this composite of my room at the Conrad Hotel. (Inspired by Heather's fabulous set on Flickr.)

35mm mishaps

When film works, it is grand. There's nothing more beautiful than analog photography.

But when film doesn't work, it can be heartbreaking. I'm 99.9% sure that this particular mishap was entirely my fault, but I'm still not quite sure what happened.

Suffice it to say, due to some sort of film rewinding issue, I lost all of my photos from Friday, July 24th. Photos of Bartram's Garden, Center City Philadelphia, Capogiro Gelato, Reading Terminal Market ... It makes me sad to think of the 36+ photos that will never be.

I know what you'll ask me. "Why don't you just stop this film nonsense and take digital photos?" And I will laugh and politely refuse to give up on analog. Film mishaps aren't the end of the world, and I'm always willing to gamble for a great shot.

Other than this minor setback, I've been enjoying the heck out of my "new" Olympus OM-1n. I'm back from Philadelphia, and have posted all of my (film) photos on Flickr, so you can see some polaroids and 35mm images from my trip. (I did take some digital snapshots, but nothing spectacular enough to upload.)

Summertime Adventures

148 // 365: Oh Staycation ...

It already seems like the far distant past ... But just a week ago, I was in the midst of a lovely staycation. During our fun five-day weekend, we went hiking at Catoctin Mountain, saw some cute critters at the zoo, and enjoyed a day at the National Arboretum.

Christopher went back to work on Monday, so I was on my own. I spent part of the morning downtown, having a leisurely breakfast at La Dolce Vita. This was my view while sitting out on Carroll Creek.

There's so much to do right here in the Frederick area, and we had a great time. I'm looking forward to visiting Philadelphia in July and New York in August. Let me know if there's anything we absolutely shouldn't miss while we're there!

Home is where the wildlife is

My grandmother gives me a gift subscription to my hometown newspaper ... It's a nice way to keep up-to-date on the news in Northeastern PA, and a wonderful reminder of the place where I grew up.

Clematis In the woods

From the "Dimock News" column on June 10, 2009:

Ida and Walter Rhodes watched a black bear walk through their yard last week. The Farnellis were charmed by a tiny newborn faun [sic] that stayed in their yard for hours. Many folks have heard the coyotes "singing" their spring chorus down in the forest. What wild life have you seen lately?

Well, let's see ... Here in Frederick, there are the kids who play basketball in the street, motorcycles drag racing the next block over, dogs barking everywhere, and neighbors using a noisy leaf blower to clean off their deck every morning. Does that count as wildlife?

I can't complain too much. We have access to fabulous restaurants, picturesque parks, and a charming historic downtown. I can walk or bike to almost everything except my office, which is only a 10-minute drive. The birds, squirrels, and bats love our garden. But I still miss the Endless Mountains sometimes.
