In the first four months of 2012, I sent only seven press releases, but logged almost 50 press mentions for my organization. (It’s a small, regional business association.)

I think it’s funny that so many people fixate on the perceived power of a press release … Most of our mentions are a result of building relationships with local reporters and developing areas of subject matter expertise.

So here’s the free PR advice of the day: Try dedicating less energy to writing press releases and more energy to being social, responsive, and well-informed.

We try to follow a vegan and gluten-free diet as much as possible at home, and we’ve found that we both feel much better when we do. Today’s menu: Chocolate chip & cherry muffins at breakfast, and mac & cheese at lunch. Despite the restrictions, I like both of these recipes much better than the “original” versions.

A couple of my photos were featured in this week’s Impossible Project newsletter - April Showers Bring Instant Flowers. I’ve been shooting lots of spring blossoms lately. These particular monochrome flowers are PX100 UV+ shots I made on my recent trip to NYC.

I don’t mention it as often as I should, because I don’t want to be too self-promotey, but my work has been featured in a bunch of Impossible newsletters recently, including The Eight Wonders of the Impossible World (March 6, 2012) and Take a Walk on the Wide Side (February 21, 2012).

It’s always humbling to be included with amazing instant photographers from around the world. The Impossible Project does a wonderful job of spotlighting and connecting artists who use their film … It’s refreshing to work with a company that really gets it.

I really appreciate it that you are attempting to give credit. Your blog design doesn’t show tags, so I didn’t see my name there. Tumblr has a couple other options for providing attribution that make it a bit more clear when the content isn’t your own:

First, content source. It’s on the right column when you’re creating an new post. You should put the creator’s website or the original source (in this case, my Flickr link) there.

Click-through attribution is great, and I think you should use it WITH the content source link. This is how the click-through link and the content source appear in the Tumblr dashboard when you’re finished posting:

If you don’t use the content source link, the “source” will say “bl00dy-sabbath” when others reblog it. It’s very misleading.

Since not everyone views Tumblr blogs in the dashboard, I also suggest using a third method of credit: Include the creator’s name (with a link) in the caption of the photo.

Another thing you’ll want to keep in mind — If a photographer marks their image with © and/or “all rights reserved,” you are legally required to seek permission before using the image. I’ve basically given up on policing Tumblr, so I’m not going to ask you to remove the image from your site. But you should know that you’re taking a significant legal risk by posting images when you don’t have permission … Not all photographers will be as understanding.
